Enjoy insights into the working world of historians who put “bits and pieces” together to weave understanding of the past.
Guest speaker Dr. Allen H. Stokes Jr., librarian emeritus and former director of the South Caroliniana Library, will introduce us to a recently acquired collection he is working with—the Cantey Family Papers—which include many bits and pieces related to area history. Some of these items will be displayed. Citizens surnamed Cantey have been closely associated with Kershaw County’s development from early settlement through present time.

Program attendees will also be invited to view the Archives’ current exhibit John Bartlam, Master Potter: America’s First Porcelain, in which bits and pieces of archaeology help retell a story. Bartlam set up pottery works in early Camden, his life story becoming entangled in the Revolution.
The one bit of business to be conducted will be election of officers for the coming year. Nominees are:
April 24, 2016: John Beakes speaking on “The Battle of Hobkirk’s Hill”
Feb. 21, 2016: Lon D. Outen speaking on “The Wateree: Before the Dams”

Learn about the Battle of Hobkirk’s Hill, the 1781 Revolutionary War battle fought within present city limits of Camden—almost exactly this time of year 235 years ago. The Kirkwood and Hobkirk Hill neighborhoods that eventually developed on the battlegrounds are today showplaces of later historic homes and gardens presently in spring bloom season, enjoyed by residents and tourists alike.

John Beakes
Speaker John Beakes of Maryland is author of books on Revolutionary military leaders, including two who commanded units on the Hobkirk’s Hill front line. Beakes will be introduced by the Society’s Board member Charles Baxley, also an active researcher of battle history.

The audience was captivated and all seats were taken at the Kershaw County Historical Society’s program Sunday, Nov. 15, 20015, in the Kershaw County Council Chambers when Bondy Long told the story of “Camden’s Moment in NASCAR History.”
Program attendees then moved to the Camden Archives to view the exhibit, enjoy refreshments, and continue conversations with Bondy and his guests who were part of his noted racing team. Thanks to all for a memorable event!
If you are brightening your day today taking the Junior Welfare League’s Tour of Homes, you may note in publicity a misprint stating that The Bonds Conway House is one of the tour sites. Our KCHS headquarters, The Bonds Conway House, has been on the tour at various times in the past—but this year the cottage on tour is the Little House on the grounds of the Price House (corner of Broad and York). Enjoy your tour there and throughout Camden today and this evening.
Happy Holidays to our hard-working friends in the Junior League and at the Price House, and to all touring visitors. Y’all come see us at The Bonds Conway House another time!
